USTA Eastern will honor 28 volunteers, tennis pros, players and organizations at its Annual Awards Dinner on January 21, 2012 at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in White Plains. Congratulations to Sherwin So who will receive the Press Service Award.

In April 2010, local tennis player Sherwin So created a tennis blog on the Albany Times Union (see : http://blog.timesunion.com/tennis/).  The blog is very active, with multiple posts each week on the local tennis scene, the professional tour and product reviews of tennis strings and footwear.  Readers can count on up-to-date content, as well as a sometimes colorful posts by the blog’s many readers.

Sherwin, a 4.5 player, has been playing tennis since the age of six.  He grew up in New Hartford, New York (a suburb of Utica), then moved to Niskayuna, New York, where he played on the Niskayuna High School Varsity Tennis Team his senior year on a dare from friends.  He didn’t become heavily involved until after graduating college when he started playing local tournaments.  He has been actively involved in USTA Tournaments and League tennis for the past 15+ years.

The Tennis Blog was created to fill a gap in local print media reporting.  "I wanted a place where readers can find out what is going on locally with tennis as well as what is happening on the ATP/WTA tours, the Davis and Fed Cup competitions," says Sherwin.  He also started a play test group that consists of local players and having them give their opinion and ratings on various tennis products out in the market today.  The group has tested and blog reported on eight pairs of tennis shoes and over 20 strings and counting since the blog began.

While it’s difficult for Sherwin to gauge size of his audience, numerous people have approached him before league matches that he’s never met before and commented about how much they enjoyed reading the Tennis Blog.  To Sherwin, that is probably the best rewarding aspect of the Blog, knowing people are actually reading it.
